BURNFORD, SHEILA THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEYInstinct told them that the way home lay to the west. And so the doughty young Labrador retriever, the roguish bull terrier and the indomitable Siamese set out through the Canadian wilderness. Separately, they would soon have died. But, together, the three house pets faced starvation, exposure, and wild forest animals to make their way home to the family they love. The Incredible Journey is one of the great children's stories of all time--and has been popular ever since its debut in 1961.

BYARS, BETSY THE MIDNIGHT FOX
No one asked Tom how he felt about spending two months on his Aunt Millie's farm. For a city boy, the farm holds countless terrors - stampeding baby lambs, boy-chasing chickens, and worst of all, lonliness. But everything changes when Tom sees the midnight fox. He can spend hours watching the graceful black fox in the woods. And when her life - and that of her cub - is in danger, Tom knows exactly what he must do.

MOWAT, FARLEY OWLS IN THE FAMILYLiving in the Saskatchewan River Valley, Billy and his friend, Bruce, keep lots of pets: gophers, rabbits, pigeons, even rats and snakes. When the boys get Wol and Weeps, the young owlets, the real fun begins! Wol and Weeps seem to think they're human. Wol is quite surprised to learn that he can (almost!) fly. The bolder of the two, Wol, has humorous run-ins with almost everyone: the maid, the minister, the mailman, and even Billy's faint-hearted French teacher. Wol enjoys teasing Mutt, Billy's dog, and protecting timid Weeps from mean cats and canine. When Billy's family moves to the city, Wol and Weeps make a new home on Bruce's farm.

WOODS, SHIRLEY BLACK NELL: THE ADVENTURES OF A COYOTE
Nell is born into a litter of four coyotes in a den in northern Ontario. Her black fur makes her an anomaly -- and also a prime target for hunters. As they grow, she and her siblings learn how to dodge threats from other wildlife and humans. Sometimes the pups learn from their parents, other times they learn from experience.
Eventually, Nell must leave the nest. Her quest for food brings her too close to humans and she is struck by a car. Caring people in a wildlife shelter nurse her back to health and release her back into a protected wilderness park, where she will be able to find a mate and carry on with her life.

WOODS, SHIRLEY KIT THE ADVENTURES OF A RACCOON

Born in the hollow of a maple tree, Kit spends his early days sleeping and eating. But soon he must leave the security of his mother's warmth and milk and learn to fend for himself in the wild. His mother teaches Kit and his siblings how to fish and forage, but the young raccoons learn other survival skills through trial and error. Meanwhile, the family is always on the move, as Mama raccoon struggles to keep her family safe from predators.
But without success. After Kit's sisters are killed -- one by an owl, another by a car -- Kit finds himself on his own, and life becomes even more of an adventure. He's trapped while investigating a family's garbage cans and later is chased out of a cornfield by hounds. In the end, he survives it all, finds a mate, and becomes a father to his own brood.
